Trans Fat

  • If you get confused between "good" fat and "bad" fat ... you are not alone. It can be confusing .. so here is a little tip. If you remember nothing else, remember to stay away from TRANS FAT. Now, how are you going to remember trans fat from Monounsaturated, Polyunsaturated and Saturated? Think of it this way: Eating trans fat is the same thing as standing on a rail road track when a train is coming. (Trans fat is typically found in margarines and other processed, packaged food product.)

Trans fat used to be called a "hidden fat," because it was not on food labels. But now, in 2006, the FDA has a new requirement that trans fat must be included on labels. So, for once the FDA does something worthwhile. (Not an FDA fan, as you can see.)

    Oreo: Conspiracy?

  • An Oreo, a glass of milk, an obesity crisis -- what are Oreos made up? Sugar, flour and fat -- transfat at that.

Kraft said it does not conduct research “aimed at creating consumer dependency upon any of our products.” At the same time, internal memos show the company has a history of sharing brain-research expertise with scientists from its corporate sibling, cigarette-maker Philip Morris.

    GRE

I have been studying for the GRE .. and guess what? It's not as bad as I thought. The book I have says to think of the test as a game ... so that is perfect. I just think I want to WIN .. so it helps me concentrate. Actually, it's been fun learning all kinds of new words ... like platitude, vituperate and bawdy.

Here is the game I made up to learn these words. I make up sentences about bodybuilding, using the words! For example:

  • If you are just going to give someone a platitude, don't bother.

  • If you know what is good for you, you won't vituperate me!

  • Sometimes women's bodybuilding web sites are bawdy when they include naked pictures.

OK, those sentences are kinda dumb, but at least I know what those words mean now.

    Whew!

    Hurricane Katrina

I am trying to enjoy what a beautiful weekend -- in terms of weather -- we have had -- but it seems wrong to enjoy anything with all the devastated areas and homeless (and dead) people from the hurricane. From what I have read, this is a normal reaction. I guess this is why I am really enjoying my work-outs lately. It's definitely a break to stop thinking about it and focus on something else -- even for an hour or two.

There are so many worthy organizations to donate to. Here is my favorite: FeedTheChildren.org. ($50
to deliver 350 pounds of relief aid to hurricane victims)

    Say What?

It's September already! What the ... ok, now does anyone else hate it when summer flies by way the heck too quick? Oh, just me? Actually, there is hint of fall in the air and that means we get to go to the pumpkin patch soon! Last year, we went out to this great farm that had a corn maze ... which yes, we got lost in .. and pumpkins and squash and it was so much fun.

Other than that, it is too nice to be inside on a computer. Later skater!
